The US launched multiple airstrikes on the Yemeni capital Sana’a Saturday night (03/15), killing at least 9 and wounding 9 more according to Yemeni Health Ministry spokesman Anis Al-Asbahi. The Health Ministry “condemned the crime of targeting civilians and civilian objects, which is considered a full-fledged war crime and a flagrant violation of all international laws and conventions.”
The strike comes days after the leading Yemeni anti-imperialist organization Ansar Allah was listed by the US government as a foreign terrorist organization and sanctioned several leading members. Ansar Allah responded by calling it a “badge of honor” and proceeded to resume its Red Sea naval blockade against Israel and in solidarity with the Palestinian resistance, calling it a “siege for siege”.
Trump claimed the attacks were aimed at protecting US shipping interests. He also threatened Iran for allegedly backing Yemen. Trump’s airstrikes resume Biden’s attacks on Yemen, who led a failed imperialist alliance aimed at quelling Ansar Allah in December 2023, titled “Operation Prosperity Guardian”. A high-ranking US military official later announced in 2024 that Ansar Allah could not be defeated militarily. The Yemeni organization had extended its attacks to US and allied military targets, so far destroying at least 15 MQ-9 drones violating Yemeni airspace, including as recently as in March. Yemeni forces have also successfully rebuffed US aerial and naval attacks, forcing US forces to retreat.
The attack marks Trump’s most significant direct military strike thus far in his ultra-reactionary second term. US officials have promised more may come over the next few days depending on Yemen’s response.
Palestinian resistance organizations denounced the attack, with the Popular Resistance Committee stating, “This American aggression will not succeed in breaking the strong and steadfast will of the Yemeni people in confronting the forces of zionist-American tyranny and arrogance.”
The attack comes hours after Israel killed at least 9 Palestinians and injured several more in a drone strike in north Gaza, including members of a charitable team and journalists. The Palestinian armed resistance group Islamic Jihad stated in response, “This heinous crime comes as part of a systematic escalation that exposes the occupation’s true intentions to continue its aggression and renege on all agreements reached. It underscores its determination to shed blood, making it imperative for all those who remain silent to take a decisive stance to curb this escalating criminality.”
Hamas pointed out that the massacre demonstrates Israel’s intention to violate any ceasefire deal and sabotage any prisoner exchange. The attack follow shortly after Hamas sent a delegation to Cairo to resume negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire.
According to the Gaza Government Media Office, over 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since the onset of the January 19 ceasefire.
Palestinian resistance forces have been fighting back. On March 14, a Palestinian carried out a successful stabbing operation in the occupied West Bank, killing a first sergeant and injuring two others. Islamic Jihad praised the operation, stating that it “comes as part of the ongoing response to the massacre of the century in the Gaza Strip”, and that “These heroic acts will escalate in every part of our occupied homeland, in response to the continuous crimes committed by the zionist enemy. It comes during the month of jihad and victories, despite all the repressive security measures.”
