Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) member and New York City Democrat mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has wasted no time cozying up to the city’s monopolists and the Democrat Party machinery since winning the party’s primary election last month.
Over the course of last week, Mamdani had two separate meetings with the Partnership for New York City (an alliance of 350 of the largest monopolies in the country), a meeting with Black business executives, a meeting with fellow Democrats in Washington DC, and a meeting with Democrat House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Prior to his meeting with over 100 executives from Partnership, Mamdani said at a rally, “For our city to succeed, it will take all of us. That includes those business leaders—where we have a shared interest in this city and this city’s success. I’m excited to share my plans to that end and to work with them to achieve that success.”
His “shared interest” with the billionaires he disavowed just last month was discussed with them behind closed doors in a meeting he characterized as “constructive, honest discussion.” For the billionaires’ part, president and CEO of the monopoly alliance Kathy Wylde said of Mamdani, “He did a pretty good job of making the case that he was open to conversations, discussion and learning, and that he wanted to build a coalition that would represent all New Yorkers.”
In typical fashion, the bourgeoisie represent their interests as being that of all people in order to mobilize the masses behind their agenda. Like a good Democrat dog, Mamdani rolled over before the imperialists to cater to their needs while piecing together what he can of his reputation to continue his petty theatrics.
During the meeting, Mamdani reportedly disavowed the slogan “globalize the intifada” and promised to “discourage” its use. He reiterated his stance in an NY1 interview, arguing that calls for intifada make Jews think about acts of armed Palestinian resistance and therefore should not be used. He again condemned what he called the “horrific war crime of October 7” and defended “Israeli and Palestinian” life as “equally precious”. By trafficking in the people’s just hatred of the Israeli occupation, he aims to equalize it with the heroic armed Palestinian resistance necessary for their liberation.
Mamdani also promised to consider retaining Jessica Tisch, the NYPD commissioner and a billionaire heiress, who has overseen the mass arrests and brutal repression of pro-Palestine and anti-ICE demonstrators over the past year. Her billionaire father, the chairman of the Loews conglomerate, was present at the meeting.
Later in the week, Mamdani met with Democrats Hakeem Jeffries and Ritchie Torres, two of the top recipients of funding from the prominent pro-Israel lobby group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Jeffries described his meeting with Mamdani as “constructive”, while Torres said his phone call was “mutually respectful”.
Such a trajectory is an all-too predictable formula of “progressive” Democrats, previously pointed out in The Worker: “Mamdani, like social democrats are known for, rode on the mass movements to gain popularity, then panders to the demands of the ruling class to get into office, and skillfully combines these techniques.”
