Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) killed 28-year-old Mexican tourist Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán after chasing him into the path of a semi-truck near St. Augustine, Florida on July 14.
Around 7 a.m., ICE officers encountered four people in a vehicle at a gas station outside St. Augustine. The occupants fled on foot. Coronilla Durán ran onto State Road 16, where a tractor-trailer struck and killed him. The truck driver and two bystanders—a veterinary nurse and a firefighter—attempted to save his life by providing aid, including CPR, but he died at the scene.
Coronilla Durán, a Mexican national, had entered the US on a tourist visa. After visiting family and friends in Atlanta, he traveled to Florida for a beach vacation, arriving just two days before he was killed.
Coronilla Durán’s death was one of four ICE-related murders reported within a week. On July 13, 45-year-old Jesús Manuel Arenas-Silva died while being transferred between ICE detention facilities in Georgia after relatives said ICE withheld medication he needed for a preexisting medical condition.
The same day, an ICE officer shot and killed 25-year-old Colombian worker Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. DHS claimed the officer “[feared] for public safety” when Durán Guerrero attempted to flee. According to CNN, Maine Senator Angus King said DHS told him that Durán Guerrero had not been the target of that operation.
On July 7, ICE agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican worker in Houston, Texas. DHS claimed the agent acted in self-defense, alleging Araujo attempted to hit the officer with his work van. Workers detained during the raid disputed the account, telling reporters that Araujo did not threaten anyone before he was shot. The department later acknowledged Araujo was not the intended target of the operation.
Following the shootings in Houston and Maine, monopoly media reported ICE officers were ordered to halt traffic stops, fearing uprisings in response to continued, high-profile deadly ICE terror. Soon afterward, the ultra-reactionary Trump Administration reversed the decision, asserting that traffic stops will continue.
The Intercept reports that traffic stops have become one of the main tactics of ICE terror during Trump’s second term.
