The far-right garbage “news” website the New York Post has published a vicious attack on anti-imperialist and youth activists in the Northwest under the sensationalist and scandal-mongering headline “Terrorist-aligned leftist group learns Maoist war tactics at hidden US ‘Anti-Imperialist Summer Camp’” in a blatant effort to criminalize organizations for what is protected free speech and freedom of association, well within the limits of federal and state laws.
Only citing materials from the Zionist North American Values Institute (NAVI), the rag alleges the camp was run by the Anti-Imperialist Front USA (AIF).
The far-right fear mongers make unsubstantiated claims of the age of the masked individuals depicted in images accompanying the article, deeming them “teens” due only to the presence of a “youth” organization. The article uses loaded language such as “hidden” camp, which implies intent, when in fact the material examined only indicates that the camp’s location was undisclosed.
The ultra-reactionary newspaper goes even further in its criminalization efforts by suggesting that the Anti-Imperialist Front is “terror-linked,” as if one can be linked to abstract terror.
The basic hysteria of the far right is not due to fear of a single organization, but speaks to the insecurity of the ruling class and especially its furthest right elements, a fear based on the reality that the younger generations are coming in mass to side with the oppressed and exploited of the world and to champion those at the forefront of the resistance against these atrocities.
The reactionary Mika Hackner of NAVI is quoted to have stated that Revolutionary Youth, an alleged camp participant, “recruits new members from high school campuses,” omitting the fact that the recruiters would logically be in high school themselves.
Hackner herself is a shill for all things backward. She has a track record of busting teachers’ unions and promoting anti-union policy; she is also a rabid Zionist, working directly for the Zionist Entity itself as a speech writer for the Israeli Embassy in Australia in 2007. Hackner holds a PhD in political science from a Zionist university in occupied Palestine. Such credentials indicate that the attacks are planned by and carried out in the interests of the Israeli state and, behind it, US imperialism.
To be attacked by reactionaries like New York Post, NAVI, and its director Hackner is a good thing; it demonstrates that the enemy of democratic rights around the world has cause for concern that the tide is turning against them and their interests.
The threat of criminalization of youth or anti-imperialist organizations is very real and cannot be separated from the overall process of reactionization of the old-state and the crisis of US imperialism; as it seeks a way out of the quagmire in which it has found itself, it lashes out at all ostensibly left-wing critics. Under the current administration it does this quite forcefully and publicly.
The other aspect is that new organizations learn from these experiences and are compelled by the enemy attacks to consider their vulnerabilities, to develop better methods of organization and maturated forms of propaganda.
Working people, progressives, and revolutionaries must, with a single voice, oppose all attempts at criminalizing the political opposition to imperialism.
