Ansar Allah Threatens “Siege for Siege” as Israel Starves Gaza

Farrukh Abadi

On March 7, the Yemeni anti-imperialist group Ansar Allah pledged to resume its naval blockade on Israel in four days if the latter does not lift its siege on Gaza. Israel stopped the flow of aid to Gaza on March 2 after the first phase of the 6-week ceasefire agreement concluded. Even before then, Israel had violated the terms of the ceasefire by blocking a significant amount of the aid that was supposed to enter Gaza. Israel also continued to sporadically kill civilians in the Gaza strip and delayed the withdrawal of its troops in what amounted to hundreds of violations according to Hamas.

Ansar Allah initially placed its blockade on Israel following the heroic Operation Al-Aqsa Flood by Palestinian resistance forces. Since the initiation of its blockade, which ended with the Gaza ceasefire, Ansar Allah carried out over 100 armed actions against ships linked to Israel and its allies, missile and drone strikes against Israel itself, and attacks on US war planes violating Yemeni airspace.

The announcement comes days after the Trump administration declared Ansar Allah to be a foreign terrorist organization and imposed sanctions on a number of its leaders for allegedly procuring weapons and finance from Russia, China, and Iran. A spokesman of the anti-imperialist group responded to the decision by claiming, “The Yemeni people do not consider the American classification of us as terrorists to be something that detracts from us; on the contrary, they consider it a badge of honor and it pushes them to adhere to and rally around Ansar Allah more, considering that the classification came as a punishment for Yemen and Ansar Allah’s support for Gaza.”

“The current American administration, as was the case with the previous one, is still working for the Israeli enemy and risking the interests of the American people and American taxpayers for the benefit of the Zionists,” they continued. “Everything it does does not serve the American people but rather harms them in the near and distant future and increases the state of hatred and resentment against America.”

Shortly before making the comments, Ansar Allah successfully downed yet another $32 million US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Red Sea, at least the 15th since it began its blockade.
