ICE Raids in Los Angeles Grow Increasingly Vicious as Uprisings Continue

We continue our coverage of the LA uprisings here and encourage readers to study our Editorial on the same topic.

Amid the ongoing uprisings in Los Angeles, immigration agents descended upon a Los Angeles car wash on Sunday, arresting several workers, including one who has worked at the car wash for more than a decade and lived in the US for more than 30 years.

In Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, ICE agents rammed a vehicle between two unmarked cars, firing tear gas canisters near the family’s car occupied by a driver, a passenger, a toddler, and a baby. Witnesses reported that ICE agents pointed guns at the woman and her children in the car and dragged the driver out, abducting him. According to a family member who spoke to local news, the driver was a US citizen. LAPD said the crash is being investigated as a possible assault with a deadly weapon involving federal agents.

Raids continued on Thursday morning with, Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security secretary, accompanying federal agents during an immigration raid in Huntington Park, California. Armed agents in military gear showed up at a family’s door looking for a man who was not home at the time.

According to immigration lawyers, federal agents are confining detainees in office basements without sufficient food, water, and other resources. Federal agents and national guard troops have blocked lawyers, legal aid groups, and family members from speaking to people who were arrested and have not provided information about many of their whereabouts or conditions. Some detainees have been abruptly transferred out of state to an ICE detention facility in Texas.

Photos from ICE on the social media platform X show the National Guard protecting ICE and federal agents during an operation on June 10. The heightened level of violence and utilization of the armed forces to protect ICE raids highlights how the old-state has become increasingly isolated as it attacks the most exploited and oppressed section of the working class as part of its process of destroying productive forces amid the economic crisis of overproduction.

The deployment comes as tensions increase between the two party mafias on how to handle the uprising, which continues in the face of military intervention and curfew. A federal judge on Thursday blocked Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to California, restoring control to Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom. The Trump administration immediately appealed the decision, with an appeals court blocking the judge’s ruling from taking place until it reviews the case, leaving the California National Guard in Trump’s hands. The federal judge in turn blocked a request from Newsom to restrain the Marines deployed by the Trump administration on the grounds that the Marines have so far remained in a neighboring county and have not been used for law enforcement.

As the mafias spar over control of the state bureaucracy and its armed forces amid the deepening political crisis, they continue to coordinate their efforts on the ground to violently attack protesters. LA Mayor Karen Bass put in place a curfew beginning Tuesday night, utilizing the federal deployment despite supposedly condemning it: “If there are raids that continue, if there are soldiers marching up and down our street, I would imagine that the curfew will continue.” The masses remain defiant, with mass mobilizations set to continue both in LA and across the country against immigration terror tactics and state repression.
