On Wednesday (08/20), fighters from Hamas’s military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades, raided a newly-established Israeli fortification in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
Israeli media reports that the fighters emerged from a tunnel. During the operation, several Merkava 4 guard tanks were attacked with explosives and Al-Yassin 105 anti-armor missiles designed by the Brigades themselves. A tank commander was also shot and killed by a sniper. Homes occupied by Israeli troops were hit with shells and machine-gun fire, later being stormed and cleared by Al-Qassam fighters, annihilating several Israeli soldiers in the process.
During and after the attack, surrounding areas were shelled with mortars to block Israeli reinforcements. When reinforcements arrived, an Al-Qassam fighter sacrificed himself to annihilate several soldiers with a bomb vest. The operation ended in a Palestinian victory, with wounded Israeli forces evacuating the area by helicopter.
Since the October 7 Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, and especially in recent months, the Palestinian resistance has inflicted high casualties on Israeli forces. The Israel Defense Ministry Rehabilitation Department reports that it has received roughly 80,000 soldiers for treatment since Operation al-Aqsa Flood—a notable change compared to its reported intake of 12,000 soldiers in October 2024. Israel is in a deep and worsening crisis, as evidenced by its growing casualty rate and the undeniable defeat of its latest Operation Gideon’s Chariot. Its tired and repeated threats of occupying the entire Gaza Strip and defeating Hamas—which the Zionists put forward as their objectives since Al-Aqsa Flood—combined with its escalated genocide against the entire Palestinian population highlights the aimlessness and desperation of the occupying state amid the victories of the armed resistance.
