The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has recently established a “task force” for escalating espionage and intelligence operations with the aim of overthrowing the Cuban government, intelligence sources told monopoly media in early August.
The task force is assigned to gather intelligence, conduct cyber operations, and identify contradictions within the government and between the government and the people to make openings for further US imperialist aggression.
CIA briefings gathered by monopoly outlet The New York Times mention that “Cuba is less like Venezuela and more like Iran,” suggesting the CIA’s latest approach is informed by US imperialism’s strategic defeat at the hands of Iran and its anti-imperialist allies.
The briefings suggest that if US imperialism carried out a “decapitation strike” on former President Raúl Castro—who retains an important role in Cuban politics—anti-US imperialism “hardliners” would be next in line.
The Justice Department farcically indicted Castro in abstentia on May 20 in preparation for a potential abduction and show trial, similar to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.
Monopoly media commentators such as the journal Foreign Affairs admit that Cuba will not be defeated easily because its government is resilient and its people armed, arguing that “diplomacy” under the continued genocidal blockade is a surer weapon for US domination.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said in a speech on April 16 that Cuba would defend itself against US imperialist aggression.
The Venezuelan government led by Delcy Rodríguez quickly capitulated to US imperialism after the January 3 abduction of Maduro and Flores. Monopoly media has described how US Secretary of State Marco Rubio now effectively “runs” Venezuela, looting its resources, though at the cost of inspiring growing mass rebellion.
Venezuela under Maduro formerly traded needed oil to Cuba in violation of the US embargo. The Rodríguez administration in collusion and subordination to the Trump administration has since stopped sending Cuba oil, leading to worsening blackouts intensifying the mass murder of the Cuban people.
Even after the Cuban government proposed economic cooperation with the US in March and made certain deregulation agreements in June, the Trump administration has continued pushing to overthrow the government.
On July 16, the Trump administration invited officials from dozens of countries to a conference hosted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the “resurgence of political terrorism,” where Rubio repeatedly named Cuba as central to the “far-left terrorism” threat. Days later, the Department of State released a 100-page report titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism.”
Trump also designated Cuba a National Intelligence Priorities Framework (NIPF) Priority-1 country, along with Russia, China, and Iran, according to an August 5 report by The New York Times. After the designation, the Trump administration began persecuting at least 43 organizations and individuals for carrying out solidarity work with Cuba, such as delivering humanitarian aid and medical supplies to break the US blockade. Congress has issued subpoenas demanding internal communications and financial records for BreakThrough News, The People’s Forum, and the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research.
Cuba remains a key target for US imperialism’s strategy of consolidating its domination of Latin America under the “Donroe Doctrine” in collusion and contention with Russian imperialism, Chinese social-imperialism, and other imperialist powers.
From US imperialism’s defeat at the Bay of Pigs in 1961 to decades of sabotage, terrorism, and unsuccessful assassination attempts, US imperialist intervention in Cuba has failed for nearly 70 years.
