Israel Faces Economic and Military Setbacks in War with Iran, Palestine

Farrukh Abadi

As the US and Israel continue their genocidal war against the people of the Middle East, the Zionist regime continues to accumulate losses.

Since Israel began its war of aggression against Iran, its war spending alone has cost an estimated $725 million a day, according to the former financial adviser to the Israeli army chief of staff. This does not include broader economic fallout, such as closing its airports and the loss of tourism, or the cost of the Iranian attacks. According to the Israeli Tax Authority, the first two days of Iranian strikes alone caused an estimated $277 million in damages. This takes a toll on the war-ridden country given the severe economic impacts the Palestinian resistance and other anti-imperialist forces have already imposed on Israel since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, and amid the general economic crisis of imperialism.

Militarily, sensitive sites have already been targeted by Iran, who continuously promises—and delivers—to ramp up its attacks if Israel continues its aggression. Such sites include military bases, a military command center, air defenses, a military-linked research institute, and intelligence centers. This is in addition to the casualties Israel has suffered in Iran, such as Israeli intelligence operatives, drones and drone manufacturing infrastructure, and fighter jets. Israel’s interceptors have quickly become depleted, particularly in the aftermath of Yemen’s protracted drone and missile campaign against the Zionist entity as part of its aerial blockade, and are in desperate need to be replenished.

Israel has recently ordered the retreat of much of its forces from Gaza. The Israeli media monopoly Haaretz reported on Sunday, “Within a few days, less than half of the number of soldiers stationed in Gaza before the outbreak of hostilities with Iran is expected to remain.” The soldiers are set to be stationed in the West Bank in response to concerns by the Israeli regime of infiltration and attacks from anti-imperialist forces in the region, including Hezbollah and militias from Jordan and Syria.

The retreat coincides with daily blows incurred on the Zionist forces by Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza, mainly from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). These losses are also acknowledged by Retired Israeli Major General Brik, who assessed days before the war with Iran that Israel had been “defeated by Hamas” and that Israel was on the verge of “collective suicide”. While Israel continues to carry out massacres against Palestinians in Gaza, particularly at the US-backed “aid” concentration camps, its troops have faced an unrelenting series of ambushes since ramping up its ground operations in mid-May. Over the past few days alone there have been dozens of Israeli casualties in the Gaza Strip, including high-ranking officers such as a captain and a deputy company commander.
