US President Donald Trump announced he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday (04/07), moments before a deadline he set to escalate genocidal attacks on Iran.
Despite not having met his stated military objectives, Trump wrote in a social media post that the US already won the war. He went on to say that the US is negotiating based on Iran’s demands: “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
Trump had written on social media earlier in the day, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” having previously set a deadline to destroy Iran’s bridges and power plants for Tuesday 8pm EST.
Iran’s 10-point proposal reiterates the country’s demands made earlier in the war. These include a commitment to non-aggression against Iran and resistance forces in the region, Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s right to enrich uranium, lifting all sanctions, compensation for damages inflicted on Iran, and the withdrawal of US combat forces from the region.
“Iran has achieved a great victory and has forced criminal America to accept its own 10-point proposal,” Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a statement.
Iran’s government has indicated its distrust of the US and Israel and that it is prepared to resume the war if the negotiations do not proceed according to its conditions. “Our fingers are on the trigger and if the enemy falters even a tiny bit, we will respond forcefully,” the statement said.
According to the US government, Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire, and attacks on Iran have stopped. Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who brokered the ceasefire, claims it applies everywhere, including Israel’s attacks on Lebanon. Iranian missiles continued to fall on Israel as the ceasefire was announced.
Israel’s most recent invasion of Lebanon has faced failure, with the resistance movement Hezbollah delivering crushing blows to the Zionist entity and most recently ambushing and defeating two incursions by Israeli special forces on 04/06, leading the entity to scale back its war objectives even before the announcement of the ceasefire.
The US and Israel failed to overthrow the Iranian government, seize its uranium, or destroy its military capabilities, despite waging war on the country for 40 days. The US-Zionists carried out numerous assassinations, a botched operation to seize Iran’s uranium under the guise of rescuing its forces, and daily bombing attacks.
The Iranian people succeeded in their defensive war through mobilizing the masses of the Iran in defense of their nation, through the support of resistance forces of Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen, and through economically strangling the imperialists by closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
While Trump said on social media that the ceasefire is predicated on Iran opening the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, Iran has maintained that it will remain in charge of the Strait. According to Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, “For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordinating with Iran’s Armed Forces.”
