Hezbollah has intensified its use of explosive attack drones against invading Zionist forces in southern Lebanon following Israel’s violation of the 10-day ceasefire in April.
Footage released by Hezbollah shows first-person-view (FPV) “suicide drones” striking a range of targets, including infantry positions and tanks. Lebanese media has reported the drones have annihilated Zionist soldiers and the Iron Dome has struggled to intercept them.
Israel’s objective of seizing all Lebanese territory south of the Litani River remains unfulfilled. Since Israel’s invasion on March 2, fighting has remained restricted within a few miles of the Israeli border. The invasion continues despite the formal ceasefire, which Israel violated within a day of its implementation.
During the previous 15-month ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel beginning November 2024, which Israel violated over 15,000 times, Hezbollah significantly expanded and modified its drone capabilities. The group has relied on low-cost FPV systems built from 3D-printed and commercially available components.
The drones use fiber-optic technology, connecting the operator to the drone with a thin cable, removing radio transmission and the possibility of remote jamming. Each drone costs between $300-$400, far less than the Israeli-purchased FPV systems that cost a thousand dollars or more each.
Hezbollah’s statements on anti-tank operations indicate the rate of Israeli Merkava tank strikes has increased significantly compared to the period before the November 2024 ceasefire.
On May 10, Eyal Zamir, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), told high-level military research officials there is no known effective defense against the drones and that an unlimited budget had been allocated to devise one.
The IDF is establishing a domestic FPV drone factory as part of its response to Hezbollah’s successful campaign.
