On April 16, US-Israel agreed to a 10-day ceasefire with Lebanon, submitting to Iran’s demands for a regional ceasefire and Hezbollah’s victory over invading Zionist troops in southern Lebanon.
Iran demanded a ceasefire for the entire region as part of the April 7 ceasefire it conquered through its victorious 40-day defensive war against the US and Israel. After the US and Israel reneged on the agreement and continued their genocide in Lebanon, Iran maintained its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade placed heavy economic pressure on US imperialism until it was forced to submit to Iran’s demands. Iran had also threatened to resume its strikes on Israel.
Hezbollah, the party leading the anti-Zionist resistance in Lebanon, defeated invading Zionist troops, who once again failed to make it more than a few miles into Lebanese territory. Between the start of Hezbollah’s military operations against Israel on March 2 and the ceasefire on April 16, Hezbollah carried out over 2,100 operations against the Zionist entity, with roughly half targeting Israeli forces in Lebanon and the other half hitting targets within Israel itself. With a daily average of about 50 operations, Hezbollah reports striking over 1,000 Israeli cities, settlements, and military sites; destroying over 200 Israeli military vehicles; and inflicting over 600 casualties on the Zionists.
Trump announced the latest ceasefire after direct talks were held between Lebanon and Israel for the first time since 1993. The negotiations with the sell-out Lebanese government provided the US and Israel cover for their submission to Iran and Hezbollah.
Hezbollah stated its “cautious commitment” to the ceasefire while denouncing the Lebanese government for allowing Israel’s continued occupation of Lebanon.
“The hand of [our] fighters will remain on the trigger, cautious of the enemy’s treachery and breach of promises,” Hezbollah said in a statement.
Currently, Israel is occupying about 10% of Lebanon’s land. Since its invasion of Lebanon on March 2, Israel has murdered over 2,000 Lebanese people and displaced more than one million.
After Israel continued to attack Lebanon in violation of the latest ceasefire, Trump wrote on social media, “Israel will not be bombing Lebanon any longer. They are PROHIBITED from doing so by the U.S.A. Enough is enough!!!”
The ceasefire deepens Israel’s political crisis. British monopoly outlet BBC cites a former Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff saying, “A pattern has developed in which ceasefires are imposed upon us – in Gaza, in Iran, and now in Lebanon.” Leaks from an Israeli security cabinet meeting that took place right before the ceasefire was announced claim that ministers were not allowed to vote on it.
Israel’s armed forces had declared they were advancing into Lebanon the day before the ceasefire, and had repeatedly claimed that Hezbollah was on the verge of defeat. Right before their direct negotiations with Lebanon, the Zionist entity stated that a ceasefire was not on the table, demanding that Hezbollah first be disarmed.
Hezbollah remains highly operational, with attempts to disarm them by the Lebanese government failing earlier this year. The people of southern Lebanon are already returning to their homes victorious, waving flags of the Lebanese resistance.
