The Spanish government arrested pro-Palestine philanthropist Fergie Chambers on July 10, following the orders of the US Department of Justice.
The Trump Administration is requesting the extradition of Chambers to the United States, where he faces “terrorism financing” charges.
Chambers was arrested as he was driving through Ibiza with his family. He has been denied bail and contact with the outside world.
His arrest puts in question Spain’s sovereignty and the government’s claim to be pro-Palestine, as it marks the first time an individual has faced extradition to the US from Spain for standing with the Palestinian people.
Chambers is an heir to the Cox family fortune, one of the richest families in the United States. In 2023, he cut ties with his family, sold his stake in Cox Enterprises, and pledged to give away his wealth to anti-imperialist and international solidarity projects.
He has been the largest individual donor to individual fundraisers in Gaza and Palestinian groups. The Sameer Project, which helps distribute food, clean water and other necessities to displaced families all over the Gaza Strip, said that Fergie’s support was “critical to our work”. Gazan reporter Wissam Shabat said on X that Fergie and his wife Stella “have been the main reason a lot of families in Gaza can afford the basics everyday”.
In addition to supporting the Palestinian cause, Chambers has a long history of activism. He participated in the protests against the police murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline in Standing Rock, and the Stop Cop City movement in Atlanta, to name a few.
According to The Grayzone, which received access to the sealed indictment, Chambers is being persecuted over dubious federal charges of money laundering with the intent to provide material support to “foreign terrorist organizations”. The same source indicates that the indictment provides zero evidence of the claims.
The timing of Chambers’ arrest coincides with recent efforts of US imperialists to persecute revolutionaries and activists worldwide. On July 9, bourgeois media reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio invited senior ministers from over 60 countries to discuss the “resurgence of transnational far-left terrorism”.
The Trump Administration’s counterterrorism czar Sebastian Gorka—who has deep ties to Israel and British Intelligence—recently unveiled a plan to use foreign terrorism labels to justify surveilling and persecuting activists who disagree with the US government.
The efforts internationally follow increased repression domestically, notably with the Trump Administration’s “antifa” executive order in 2025 to investigate individuals and groups that espouse left-wing ideology and add terrorism enhancements to charges in order to maximize prison sentences.
Weeks before his arrest, Chambers reflected on X about the increase in state repression: “anyone can just be labeled a ‘terrorist’ and suddenly due process stops applying,” he said, adding, “Let the era of brave outliers acting on conscience against a sea of pacifist delusion end, and the era of mass rebellion begin. Hell has arrived, and the only way out is to fight like hell.”
