An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man this afternoon in North Austin. Demonstrators told The Worker they believe the man had died, and identified the ICE agent believed to be responsible for the shooting.
6:58 p.m.—A witness to the shooting told The Worker that the victim is 28-year-old Venezuelan man Wilber Rafael Garces Perez.
6:31 p.m.—The police have completely retreated, sources on the ground told The Worker. There are over 200 protesters occupying the whole access road.
6:23 p.m.—A gas station attendee nearby told The Worker that three shots were fired in connection with the ICE shooting.
6:16 p.m.—Police have been forced to retreat and regroup around Anderson Square and Anderson Lane, according to reporters with The Worker on the ground. Windshields of law enforcement vehicles have been smashed out. Hundreds are now protesting and numbers are steadily growing.
5:41 p.m.—Breaking: State troopers just shot pepper balls at a crowd of protesters after they began approaching ICE, according to reporters on the ground with The Worker. The crowd is helping a 14-year-old who was pepper sprayed by state forces. Crowds have increased in response to DPS repression, now numbering over 100, and are amassing at the intersection of West Anderson and US Highway 183. The people are resisting DPS and blocking traffic.
5:39 p.m.—Spontaneous protests have broken out confronting ICE, state troopers, and city police.
