An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent threw 63-year-old Pedro Mendoza Chavez to the ground September 25 in northwest San Antonio, causing a severe head injury.

According to a worker who witnessed the assault, Chavez and several other workers were in a truck carrying landscaping equipment when ICE agents stopped them. The other workers fled on foot as agents chased them into a nearby neighborhood. Chavez was the only worker detained.

The worker said that an ICE agent caught Chavez and threw him to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the pavement. The worker said he believed Chavez’s head had been cracked open. He also alleged that ICE agents covered blood on the pavement with dirt.

Video from the scene shows Chavez bleeding from the head as paramedics treat him.

Paramedics took Chavez to University Hospital, where he received stitches for his head injury, according to Democratic mafia Congressman Joaquin Castro.

ICE agents prevented Chavez’s wife from visiting him at the hospital, according to Castro. His wife also said ICE gave her conflicting information about Chavez’s location and condition and told her that he had fallen rather than thrown to the ground.

The hospital discharged Chavez into ICE custody, and he is being held at a detention facility in Taylor, Texas, according to his family and Castro’s office.

The incident is part of a broader escalation of ICE terror in Texas and across the country, such as the September 20 ICE shooting of Wilber Garcés Pérez in Austin.
