On March 25, Hamas released a statement calling for “intensifying marches and solidarity events in all cities and capitals” from Al-Quds Day (03/28) to Land Day (03/30), making them “days of rage and protest.”
Al-Quds Day is an anti-Zionist holiday commemorating Palestinian national liberation, held on the last Friday of Ramadan. Land Day commemorates the 1976 martyrdom of six Palestinians who protested against Israeli land seizure in Northern Palestine.
Answering the call, millions of protesters hit the streets in defense of the Palestinian people and their armed struggle.
On March 28, two million marchers demonstrated in Yemen to celebrate Al-Quds Day, denouncing U.S. attacks on Yemen and showing solidarity with the Palestinian national resistance, chanting “Death to the U.S., death to Israel!” Protesters called for a boycott of American and Israeli goods. Al-Quds Day demonstrations were also held in Iran, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei affirming in an Al-Quds Day statement that Iran’s support of Palestine would continue for years.
On the same day, protesters gathered outside of Newark, New Jersey’s district courthouse where Palestine solidarity activist Mahmoud Khalil’s immigration hearing was being held, demanding his immediate release and for the end to the occupation of Palestine. Another demonstration was held at Harvard University, calling for university divestment from Israel.
On March 29, a protest celebrating Land Day was held in Los Angeles, California. Protesters upheld armed struggle as the sole path for national liberation, chanting: “There is only one solution: intifada, revolution!” and “Resistance is justified when people are colonized!”
On March 30, thousands of protesters in New York City commemorated Land Day, calling for a return of Palestinians to their homeland through an end to its occupation. Protesters told The Worker volunteers that while they were not yet organized, the state’s targeting of activists strengthened their resolve to protest and get organized. One protester emphasized that people in the U.S. must recognize that every bomb it drops abroad is a reflection of imperialist profit-seeking. Organizers urged for mass participation in resisting the kidnapping and deportation used against activists in the U.S.
The millions-strong protests internationally increasingly show that the masses support the justified armed resistance of the Palestinian people and reject Israel’s legitimacy.
