Ansar Allah Defies US Airstrikes, Remains Steadfast in Defense of Palestine

Since late March, the US has intensified its air campaign against the Yemeni anti-imperialist group Ansar Allah following its resumption of its siege on Israel, with Trump bypassing Congress and going to war. In response to US airstrikes, Ansar Allah’s Yemeni Armed Forces shot down multiple US drones, including two MQ-9 reconnaissance drones just days apart in early April.

Despite the US spending over $200 million in munitions in three weeks of airstrikes, Ansar Allah remains steadfast in their resistance. The group has withstood the bombardment, reinforced their shelters and targeted sites, maintained its fighting capacity, and retaliated against US forces, frustrating American military objectives.

Pentagon officials have admitted to “limited success” in their attempts to destroy the group’s missiles, drones, and launchers, which are primarily stored underground. Ansar Allah has proven Trump’s threats to “completely eliminate” them to be empty cries from a butcher-in-chief losing confidence.

On April 6, Ansar Allah launched a missile attack on a US supply ship in the Red Sea, reaffirming their commitment to enforce a naval blockade until Israeli aggression ceases. The blockade, which began in 2023, has significantly disrupted Israel’s economy as well as global trade. Over the course of the initial blockade, global crude oil exports dropped for the first time since 2021. The Suez Canal, a key trade route through which 12-15% of global trade passes, has seen a 70% drop in activity and a loss of approximately $800 million in revenue per month. In 2024, Israel’s Port Eilat declared bankruptcy, directly citing the effects of Ansar Allah’s operations. As a result of the naval blockade, Israel has been forced to halt shipping through the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, the Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea.

Undeterred by US aggression, Ansar Allah has escalated its attacks directly against Israel. Reporting on Ansar Allah’s recent operations, Commander Sayyed Abdul-Malik Badr El-Din al-Houthi announced the resumption of missile strikes deep into occupied Palestine as part of an aerial blockade. At least 8 aerial attacks have been launched against Israel since the latter’s March 18 reinvasion of Gaza, damaging infrastructure, causing confirmed casualties and economic disruptions, and forcing airlines to divert or cancel flights to Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s main airport. Ansar Allah has reiterated that their aerial and naval sieges will remain in place until the siege on Gaza is lifted.

Commander al-Houthi called for renewed global mobilization, saying, “There must be a return to global activism and movement similar to or greater than what occurred during the 15 months of the Al-Aqsa Flood.” He noted the increased repression faced by activists in the US and pointed out the importance of economically devastating Israel, stating that expanding the boycott of Israeli and American goods “would have a significant impact.”
