17 Indian Maoist Leaders Reported in Custody; Several Dead

Edgar Lee

The Revolutionary Students’ Front of India reported that on June 6, 17 Maoist leaders in India have been arrested by Chhattisgarh State Police. Out of the 17, several have already been killed by old State forces, who cite fake “encounters”—extrajudicial executions justified by a fabricated situation—with guerrillas. The Civil Rights Committee of the State of Telangana has demanded that the arrested leaders be presented alive and unharmed for trial. When revolutionaries are captured in India, there is a high risk of them being martyred in a fake “encounter”.

This arrest came one day after Communist Party of India (Maoist) Central Committee member Sudhakar and Telangana State Committee member Bhaskar were martyred under claims of an encounter.

These genocidal acts by the old Indian state are a part of “Operation Kagaar”, which, since 2017, has been carried out to wage genocide and counter-revolution against the People’s War led by the Communist Party of India (Maoist), initiated in 1967. Fake “encounters” are part of the everyday playbook of “Operation Kagaar”, where the old Indian State forces capture Maoists, true democrats, and peasants, and execute them, staging an armed confrontation to justify it.

On May 21, CPI (Maoist) suffered a great loss when General Secretary Basavaraj along with 26 other Party members were martyred by old State forces in the Gundekot forest massacre, where, despite a one-sided ceasefire being present in the region, the old State forces, in a vile encirclement and annihilation campaign, initiated combat and captured Comrade Basavaraj alive, later executing him, according to the CPI (Maoist). The example of Comrade Basavaraj has inspired many more to pick up the struggle where he left off and continue fighting, carrying the People’s War forward.

The International Communist League has, in a “special and urgent call”, called on all revolutionary and progressive organizations to carry out a campaign in memory of Comrade Basavaraj, in defense of the CPI (Maoist) and the People’s War it leads, and against “Operation Kagaar” until the end of the Martyrs’ Memorial Week of Revolution in India, August 3.
