On Saturday, dozens of protesters marched through Times Square in New York City celebrating Iran’s recent victory against US and Israeli aggression. Protesters waved flags of Palestine and Iran and carried a banner that read “Glory to the Axis of Resistance” with pictures of notable anti-imperialist figures from the region.

Iran’s successful Operation True Promise 3 came in response to US-Israeli aggression against Iran in mid-June. Hundreds of Iranian missiles pummeled key military and settler infrastructure in Israel, and missile attacks were also carried out against the largest US military base in the region. Shortly after Iran’s attacks on the US, Trump and Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire, bringing to an end the open conflict between the US-Israel and the Iranian people.

Saturday’s march celebrating this victory successfully shut down the Red Stairs at Times Square, a popular tourist destination, as dozens of cops trailed the demonstrators. Some tourists and passerbys cheered as protesters chanted “It is right to rebel, NYPD go to hell!” and “Resistance is glorious, we will be victorious!”

One protester told a volunteer with The Worker that the US-Israeli war on Iran was “not sustainable. It’s for the arms companies, land, and oil. It’s short-sighted; the leaders are frightened and they’re just lashing out while everything is going down hill for them.”

Another activist told The Worker that the US “started [the war with Iran]. Iran is not breaking any laws, they’re just doing what they did. [The US and Israel] are outraged about getting hit now? You have been doing this for almost two years nonstop. If anything happens to you it’s honestly warranted.“

One protester connected anti-imperialist organizing to the need to actively study. “It’s not good enough to just take action, we need to make sure we are studying too,” she told The Worker, noting that “we need to understand the political atmosphere” in order to properly organize and win.

At the end of the march, the speaker noted how despite the relatively small size of the protest, they managed to shut down a tourist attraction and successfully propagate their positions. The speaker called on protesters to continue coming back every day and every week to “fight for all oppressed nations against imperialism”.
