Iranian Government Elects New Supreme Leader, Continues War of National Resistance

Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the new supreme leader of Iran on Monday (03/09).

Mojtaba Khamenei is the son of the previous Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated on the first day of the latest US-Israeli war of aggression launched against the country on February 28.

Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the role despite his father’s opposition to hereditary succession, according to senior Iranian officials. The appointment is seen as a powerful rebuke of the US and Israeli war of aggression, signaling continuity in the government and defiance of President Trump’s claims that the US would dictate Iran’s leadership.

Since taking office, Mojtaba Khamenei has coordinated new waves of attacks against US and Israeli forces. As of Tuesday, Iran had launched the 33rd wave of its defensive Operation True Promise 4, striking targets across the Middle East.

Iran and allied resistance groups in Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria have hit multiple US bases in Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria, and Jordan; a missile defense site in the United Arab Emirates; and radar and aerial defense systems across Gulf countries.

The US confirmed the death of another imperialist soldier at a Saudi base following an Iranian strike, while other casualties have been classified as “non-hostile.” The Iranian government maintains that it has inflicted hundreds of casualties on US forces since the start of the war and has even taken several prisoners of war.

Iran and Hezbollah have struck sites within Israel, including the Haifa oil refinery, Haifa Naval Base, military satellite facilities, and illegal settlements.

Several Israelis have been annihilated, both within the Zionist entity and among its invading troops in Lebanon. The Israeli Health Ministry says more than 1,600 Israelis were hospitalized during the first week of the war.

Lebanese media report Hezbollah downed an Israeli helicopter, inflicting heavy losses on invading troops.

Over Iranian skies, the Iranian armed forces report downing over 80 US and Israeli drones.

Iran has also recently struck the Dubai airport, the busiest airport in the world, and BAPCO, Bahrain’s largest oil refinery.

In addition to targeting oil and gas sites in the region, Iran has inflicted heavy economic damage to imperialist powers through its continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Around 20% of the world’s crude oil passes through the Strait.

Oil prices spiked to nearly $120 a barrel on Monday, the highest since 2022. Several US and British oil tankers ignoring the blockade orders have been hit, while hundreds of tankers remain stranded.
