Workers, students, and revolutionaries in the US carried out actions on May 17 in commemoration of the initiation of armed struggle in Peru, known as ILA80.

On May 17, 1980, the Communist Party of Peru (PCP) under the leadership of Chairman Gonzalo initiated people’s war toward the country-wide conquest of power. The people’s war in Peru, which continues today, is of particular significance to the international proletariat, as it is within this people’s war that Maoism was first defined as the third and highest stage of the ideology of the international proletariat by Chairman Gonzalo in 1982.

The Worker received reports detailing events in the US in commemoration of ILA80. Workers, students, and revolutionaries held studies and discussions of documents from the people’s war in Peru along with The Worker’s recent editorial commemorating ILA80 “The Initiators”, carried out distributions of these documents to workers, watched videos on the people’s war, and held rallies where attendees delivered speeches on the significance of this revolutionary holiday.

Particular points of discussion at events included the history and significance of the PCP, the people’s war it leads, and Chairman Gonzalo’s leadership; the role of the guiding ideology, Maoism, and Chairman Gonzalo’s universally-valid contributions to the ideology; the necessity of carrying out ideological struggle and combating revisionism and opportunism; the central role of workers and peasants in their revolution, and the extensive participation of women; the universality of revolutionary violence; and the role of US imperialism in Latin America today.

The Worker received the following photos of some of the ILA80 commemorations.
