Chloe Freeman, a registered nurse in Ann Arbor, MI received a federal misdemeanor charge of “instigating or assisting escape” after she allegedly helped an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee escape custody while he was being treated at Trinity Health hospital, according to court documents unsealed in late September.
The criminal complaint says that Freeman “knowingly and willfully” helped the man escape the hospital through an ambulance bay after he was admitted for a head injury on May 28.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed the man was injured after tripping over a curb while trying to flee US Border Patrol agents and brought him to the hospital for treatment. DHS has repeatedly attempted to cover up evidence of their violence, such during their abduction of a 63-year-old worker in San Antonio or the beating of a US citizen in Evanston, IL last month.
According to the complaint, Freeman saw in the man’s file that he was an ICE custody patient and said that she did not agree with ICE separating people from their families. The complaint alleges that Freeman told hospital investigators that she “was going to set him free.”
Freeman said that she did not know the man was in ICE custody at the time of his treatment because there were not ICE agents in the room with him.
Freeman was released on a $10,000 bond after her initial court appearance on September 29. According to Freeman’s attorney Matthew Borgula, she intends on pleading not guilty to the charge.
After the incident, Freeman was fired from her job at Trinity Health. The ICE detainee who escaped custody has not been found as of the release date of the court documents.
Few DHS agents have faced any legal consequences for the agency’s pattern of murdering, beating, and terrorizing foreign-born workers and demonstrators.
