Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained and beat a Black US citizen in Evanston, IL before abandoning him without calling for medical attention on September 20.
Two agents put their knees on the man’s back, severely beating him while he screamed “I’m a citizen, leave me alone,” an eyewitness shared with The Associated Press.
Another bystander reported that the man’s eye socket and temple were swollen, and his face was badly scraped. Agents wrestled the man to the ground and checked his identification before scattering his wallet.
Eyewitness footage shows ICE agents then abandoned the injured man on the side of the road. Agents later told the police they fled in fear of protesters.
A bystander called an ambulance after the agents left. Saint Francis Hospital diagnosed the man with head, neck and teeth injuries.
ICE Supervisor Estaban Rivas told police that the man resembled a target and that he had failed to identify himself when questioned. DHS has not released their alleged target, and federal law prohibits ICE agents from detaining someone for refusing to identify themselves.
Rivas told police that blood stains on his hands came from an injury sustained while trying to handcuff the man, despite a bystander seeing hand print-shaped bloodstains on the man’s shirt.
