Alleged Iranian Threats Lead US to Withdraw All Bombers from UK Air Base

The US withdrew all 12 of its B-1B Lancer heavy bombers from Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford base on Oct. 4 amid fears of a suspected Iranian drone attack.

The US military confirmed that all bombers deployed to Fairford had returned to their home bases in the US. According to The New York Times, the withdrawal was so urgent that some bombers departed before the aerial refueling aircraft needed to support their return flights were ready.

The US has used Fairford to launch strikes against Iran with the British government’s approval. Reuters has described the air base as the “preferred European base for US bombers.”

British counterterrorism police arrested seven men between Sept. 27 and Oct. 6 in connection with the alleged plot against the base. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there is a “strong indication” that Iran had played a role, but has not released evidence substantiating the claim. Iran’s Foreign Ministry denied involvement in the alleged plot.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps declared that “any base used to invade Iranian territory is a legitimate target” in a July statement regarding US bombing operations from Fairford.

Iranian strikes have inflicted substantial damage on US military installations across the Middle East since the start of the US-Israeli war of aggression. Satellite imagery shows that Iran has damaged or destroyed hundreds of structures at US military sites, forcing the US to retreat from bases in various countries including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar.
