US Lifts Sanctions on Iran’s Oil Following Memorandum of Understanding

The US lifted sanctions on Iranian oil on June 22 as part of the conditions Iran and its allies imposed on the imperialist superpower following their successful war of national resistance.

The sanctions are to be lifted for a 60-day period, over the course of which the US and Iran will engage in peace talks based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties on June 17.

Based on Iran’s victory conditions, the fourteen-point agreement stipulates a ceasefire throughout the region, including Israel’s invasion of Lebanon; acknowledgment that the US will not attack Iran; an end to the US naval blockade of Iran and withdrawal of its troops from the proximity of Iran; that the US will give Iran $300 billionfor reconstruction; that the US will lift all sanctions on Iran, including immediately rescinding sanctions on Iran’s oil; and that the US will return all frozen or restricted assets to Iran.

In return, Iran is required to lift its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and allow ships to pass without paying tolls for 60 days, and commit to not procuring or developing nuclear weapons. Iran has always maintained that its nuclear program is for civilian use only, and the restrictions on charging tolls for 60 days indicates that Iran remains in control of the Strait of Hormuz and can return to charging tolls following negotiations.

The first meeting of the 60-day negotiation period was held in Switzerland on June 21.

US Vice President JD Vance, who is heading US negotiations with Iran, said the negotiations were “very productive”. Trump and Vance have both claimed that Iran has agreed to have UN inspections of its nuclear sites, which Iran had previously cut off after saying the inspectors were providing critical information to the US and Israel. A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, however, said that “no new commitments” were made by Iran.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that the meeting “delivered major progress to end Lebanon War. Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction & development plan launched for Iran. 1st real test: Lebanon deconfliction cell.”

The two countries agreed to form various guardrails to protect the negotiations after Israel attempted to sabotage the agreement by intensifying its massacres in Lebanon in violation of the MOU.

Lebanese resistance party Hezbollahannihilated several invading Israel troops, including the commander of the brigade responsible for murdering 5-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza. Israel retaliated by carrying out over 150 strikes on Lebanon, according to the Israeli military.

In response to the violation of the MOU, Iran backed out of attending the first day of negotiations with the US, which had been scheduled for June 19, and shut down all traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials have signaled that the US must reign in its Zionist attack dog for the ceasefire to hold. The Iranian delegation returned to negotiations only after the US said Israel has agreed to a ceasefire and the Zionists decreased their attacks. Iranian officials have maintained that their armed forces have their fingers on the trigger and are prepared to return to war if needed to enforce their conditions.
