Workers Strike at Ammunition Plant Supplying US Military

Over 1,300 workers at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, MO, have been on strike since April 4 after rejecting a contract they say would lock in grueling 60-hour workweeks, mandatory overtime, and worsening shop-floor conditions. The plant produces small arms ammunition for US imperialism.

The workers are organized under the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 778. They have staffed picket lines around the clock since beginning the strike, in what they expect to be a prolonged dispute supported by a strike fund, according to strikers’ statements to The Worker.

Striking workers told The Worker they are required to meet a mandatory 60-hour workweek, even when using paid time off. Failure to meet the 60-hour minimum results in disciplinary points, with seven demerits in a year leading to automatic termination.

Under the current system, workers said shifts can stretch up to 16 hours a day, five days a week.

Marvin, a technician with ten years at the plant, described conditions as “intense,” citing extreme heat in the summer. “It gets so hot that I’ve seen people fight over fans and people pass out over heat exhaustion,” he said.

Workers also reported support from union construction labor at the site. According to strikers, members of Pipefitters Local 553 and Operating Engineers Local 101 did not report to work on the first Monday of the strike. In response, general contractor J.E. Dunn implemented a dual-gate system to limit contact between striking and non-striking workers and to restrict acts of solidarity.

The strike comes amid a rise in labor actions across the United States since 2018, including among arms workers over the past year.

It also comes among increased militarization of US imperialism as it carries out genocidal wars against the oppressed countries, most recently Iran and Lebanon. The Trump administration has requested a record $1.5 trillion 2027 military budget amid reports of dwindling arsenals in the face of the victorious Iranian national resistance.

Increasing military production has led to longer hours, higher work tempos, reduced safety measures, and other attacks on working conditions. Ignoring this, the union’s statements during the strike have appealed positively to the ammunition plant’s place in US imperialist aggression.

One such press release quotes IAM International President Brian Bryant saying, “As global conflicts continue to escalate, the importance of this work cannot be overstated,” continuing, “Our members are standing up for a fair contract that reflects their skill, their sacrifice and the essential role they play in supporting our nation and its allies.” Polls show the majority of respondents in the US oppose the US-Zionist war against Iran, while the vast majority oppose any potential ground invasion of the country.
